What is Counselling Psychology?

Counselling Psychologists apply their knowledge of psychological theory and research to therapeutic practice with individuals who have encountered problems, or issues, which are creating unhappiness and a lower level of mental and/or physical functioning.

Counselling Psychologists offer a collaborative relationship to assist in exploration of the presenting issues, and to develop an understanding of the impact specific issues have had on the individual. With this insight therapists offer further support to individuals who wish to make changes within their lives to achieve a healthier psychological functioning.

Throughout the therapeutic process therapists remain aware of the individuals emotional well-being, and consideration is made about their location within the lifecycle, their lifestyle and relationships.

By using an integrative approach, therapy supports the individual in integrating the differing parts of their personality. Using psychological models such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic, gestalt and client-centred, your needs can be assessed, and a therapeutic approach will be offered to work with you in the most productive way to support positive life changes.
